The worldwide Halal ingredients industry for food and beverages, cosmetic products and pharmaceuticals was estimated to be $245 billion in the year 2015 according to Halal Expo held in Europe. In the year 2014, the 57 Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) states that in total $33 billion is imported ingredients over all categories which accounted of 13 percent of the total demand of ingredients.

The Halal industry is highly advanced and developed with their leading players mainly located in the non- OIC countries which has resulted in large amount of ingredients which are made from animal derived ingredients or alcohol content. This is because of lack of standardization of ingredients and products according to Halal certification and lack of enforcement in certain sectors.

The most harmful and notable Haram ingredients include lard, gelatin, carmine (red colour derived from insects) and pepsin which is particularly used in dairy product like cheese. Due to this, the consumer awareness is increasing which is leading to strict OIC member states requiring Halal ingredients and increasing the opportunities and markets for Halal ingredients for Muslim consumer market around the globe.

Looking to the present scenario, there is a high need for vigorous checking of Halal certification across the large food value chain to see that Non-Halal ingredients are not used in the making of Halal products. For this to happen, there is a need of awareness among the food formulators and processors about different and common food ingredients like colourings and proteins, flavouring and if they are being used for Halal packaged foods. There is a need of centralize database hub so that all consumers and suppliers can refer to. As for now this is taking place on local basis.

Muslim Consumer Group is an organization which is attempting in enumerating the halal ingredients over the world but it is yet not in many of North American product lists. Collaboration between OIC and nations will help in creating standard and global hub for information’s for both consumers and also to facilitate the Halal certification procedures of Halal Trade and Halal Economy.
